Fraction Number Line

Fraction Number Line moves the fraction off the pie and onto a ruler between 0 and 1. By dragging a bead to the exact position, students discover that a fraction is a distance, not just a count of shaded pieces.

What students practice

Placing fractions on a number line prepares students for comparing fractions by size, finding equivalent fractions, and eventually understanding fractions greater than 1 — all of which depend on seeing fractions as distances rather than parts of a shape.

  2. Use the denominator ±1 buttons to subdivide the line into the right number of equal intervals.
  3. Drag the bead to the correct tick, or fine-tune with the numerator ±1 buttons.
  4. Press Check when the bead sits on the target position.

How to use it at home or in class

For 2/3 the line is divided into 3 equal intervals and the bead belongs on the second tick. Changing the denominator to 6 shows immediately that 4/6 lands on the same point, making equivalent fractions visible without any calculation.

Students often place the bead at the tick that matches the numerator without accounting for the denominator. The live subdivision makes clear that the denominator controls how large each step is — both numbers are needed together.
