Venn Diagram Sort

Venn Diagram Sort presents a two-circle Venn diagram with a divisibility rule in each circle. Students are given a number and must decide whether it belongs in the left circle only, the right circle only, the overlapping centre (both), or completely outside (neither). Each choice demands evaluating two independent conditions simultaneously — the core skill in set theory and logical classification. Grades 4–6.

What students practice

Venn Diagram Sort builds propositional logic applied to number theory: evaluating AND, OR, and NOT conditions simultaneously. Students learn to test each condition independently before combining them, the exact reasoning pattern behind set operations, database queries, and programming conditionals — introduced here through divisibility.

  1. Read the two divisibility rules shown in the left and right circles.
  2. Check whether the given number is divisible by the left rule (divide and check the remainder).
  3. Check whether it is divisible by the right rule.
  4. Tap the correct region: left only, right only, both (overlap), or neither (outside).

How to use it at home or in class

The circles show ÷3 and ÷4. The number 12 divides evenly by both (12÷3=4, 12÷4=3), so it belongs in the overlap. The number 9 divides by 3 but not 4, so it belongs in the left circle only.

Students often place a number in the overlap if it seems related to both divisors without actually testing each division. The game requires committing to a region by tapping, which forces the habit of checking both conditions separately before deciding.

Why does this game test two divisibility conditions at once instead of one at a time?
