Solving Word Problems in 3 Steps

The difficulty is not the math, it is the reading

Notice something strange. The same child who solves 8 times 6 in a second gets stuck when you write, Danny bought six packs of eight stickers, how many stickers does he have? It is the exact same calculation. So what happened? They did not get stuck on the math. They got stuck on understanding what the question is even asking for.

That is the good news. If we teach a child how to break a story into a calculation, most of the difficulty disappears. Here is a simple three-step method you can teach in one evening.

Step 1: Read all of it, to the end

The first mistake is jumping straight to the numbers. A child sees 6 and 8 and immediately multiplies or adds, without knowing what is being asked. So rule one: read the whole problem once, start to finish, just to understand the story. No pencil in hand yet.

Step 2: Mark what matters

Now read it again, this time with a pencil. Circle the numbers, and underline the question itself, what we actually need to find. It also helps to look for keywords, because they hint at the operation. Here are a few:

  • In total, altogether, added usually point to addition.
  • Left, remaining, the difference, how many more point to subtraction.
  • Each, times, packs of point to multiplication.
  • Split equally, for each one point to division.

Tell your child clearly: keywords are a hint, not a law. You always have to understand the story, not just hunt for a word.

Step 3: Draw it

Drawing is the most powerful tool and almost nobody uses it. Six circles with eight dots in each, and suddenly it is obvious this is multiplication. It can also just be a number line, or a table. The drawing turns the abstract into something you can touch.

Let's solve a real problem from start to finish

Here is the problem: a class has 28 students. The teacher wants to split them into groups of 4 for an activity. How many groups will there be?

Read. Understand the story: a class is being divided into groups.

Mark. The numbers, 28 and 4. The question, how many groups. The keyword, split into equal groups. This is division.

Draw and solve. 28 divided by 4 is 7. Seven groups. To check, 7 groups times 4 kids is 28. Exactly right. Give the full answer in a sentence: there will be seven groups.

The mistakes that keep coming back

  • Jumping straight to the numbers. Without reading the whole problem, the child guesses an operation. Almost always wrong.
  • Hunting a single keyword. They see the word altogether and add, even when the story needs something else. The hint helps, but understanding wins.
  • Forgetting to answer the question. The child computes 28 divided by 4, gets 7, and stops. But the question was how many groups. Always return to the question and answer it in a full sentence.

Questions parents ask

My child can calculate but does not understand what is being asked, how do I help? Practice only the reading step. Read a problem aloud and ask them to tell you only what the question wants, without solving. Once that step is solid, the rest follows on its own.

Multi-step problems confuse them completely, what do we do? Break it down. A two-step problem is really two small problems. Solve the first, write the result, and carry on. One step at a time.
