How to Teach Multiplication

A parent's guide to multiplication: building real understanding before the times table, memory tricks that actually stick, two-digit multiplication, and the slip-ups almost every child makes.

1Why is it important?

Multiplication is not just one more item on a list, it is the floor that almost everything else stands on. Division, fractions, percentages, area, factoring, all of them lean on a child knowing that 7 times 8 is 56 without stopping to count. A child who owns the times table feels calm in math class, while one who hesitates struggles with each new topic. It shows up in daily life too: the cost of six packs of juice, how many days are in eight weeks, how many seats fill four rows of chairs.

2How to teach?

  • Start with the meaning, not the memorizing: explain that 3 x 4 is three groups of four, which is the same as 4 plus 4 plus 4.
  • Teach the table in order of difficulty, beginning with the easy 2s, 5s, and 10s, then the 3s and 4s, and saving the trickier 6s, 7s, and 8s for last.
  • Use a grid of rows and columns so the child can see that 3 x 4 is literally a rectangle of dots, which makes the answer feel concrete.
  • Show shortcuts that lighten the load, like the finger trick for the 9s and the pattern that every multiple of 5 ends in 0 or 5.
  • Practice the facts mixed up rather than always in sequence, because a child who only knows the table in order does not truly know it yet.

3Detailed examples

4 x 7 = ?28

Explanation: Four sevens means 7 plus 7 plus 7 plus 7, which adds up to 28. Once it is solid, the child should recall it straight from the table without adding.

9 x 6 = ?54

Explanation: Use the finger trick: hold up ten fingers and fold down the sixth one. The 5 fingers left of the gap are the tens and the 4 to the right are the units, giving 54.

7 x 8 = ?56

Explanation: If this one is forgotten, break it apart: 7 x 4 is 28, and 7 x 4 again is another 28, so 28 plus 28 equals 56.

23 x 4 = ?92

Explanation: Start with the units: 3 x 4 is 12, so write the 2 and carry the 1. Then the tens: 2 x 4 is 8, plus the carried 1 makes 9. The answer is 92.

4Common mistakes

  • Mixing up similar facts such as 6 x 7 and 7 x 8 when the memorizing was mechanical and never tied to any meaning.
  • Forgetting to carry in two-digit multiplication, so 23 x 4 comes out as 82 instead of the correct 92.
  • Swapping multiplication for addition and thinking 3 x 4 is 7, which is worth fixing by returning to the idea of repeated groups.
  • Knowing the table only in order and freezing the moment a single fact is asked out of sequence.

5Tips for parents

  • Practice for five minutes every day, because short daily reps beat one long hour once a week by a wide margin.
  • Turn it into a song or a quick family quiz at the dinner table so it feels like a game rather than a chore.
  • Point out the patterns, for example that every multiple of 5 ends in 0 or 5, which removes a whole column of guessing.
  • Never force mechanical drilling before the child understands what multiplication means, since understanding always comes first.
  • When your child gets stuck on one fact, split it into smaller facts they already know and rebuild it from there.
