How to Teach Percentages

Percentages are fractions with a denominator of 100. They allow easy comparison between different quantities.

1Why is it important?

Percentages are everywhere: discounts in stores, test scores, bank interest, and statistics in the news.

2How to teach?

  • Explain that 'percent' means 'out of one hundred'
  • Start with simple percentages: 50% = half, 25% = quarter
  • Show the connection to fractions: 50% = 50/100 = 1/2
  • Practice calculating 10% first (divide by 10) then multiply as needed

3Detailed examples

25% of 80 = ?20

Explanation: 25% is a quarter. 80÷4 = 20. Or: 80 × 0.25 = 20.

15% of 200 = ?30

Explanation: 10% of 200 = 20. 5% = 10. Total 15% = 30.

4Common mistakes

  • Dividing by 100 instead of multiplying by the percentage
  • Forgetting to convert the percentage to a fraction or decimal
  • Confusion when calculating discounts (the new price, not the discount)

5Tips for parents

  • Practice while shopping: 'There's a 20% discount, how much will we save?'
  • Show a conversion table: 10%=0.1, 25%=0.25, 50%=0.5
  • Always calculate 10% first - it's the easiest!
