Pattern Builder

Pattern Builder shows a row of cube towers that grow or shrink by a fixed rule and asks students to build the missing tower. Finding and applying that rule is the first step toward all sequence work, making this the entry point for pattern thinking in grades 2–4.

What students practice

Identifying a repeating or growing rule and extending it trains students to look for structure in data — the core habit behind arithmetic sequences, function tables, and algebraic thinking introduced from grade 2 onward.

  1. Study the heights of the towers from left to right and spot what changes each time.
  2. Decide on the rule — does each tower add the same number of cubes, or does the height repeat in a cycle?
  3. Use the − / + buttons (or drag upward) to build the missing tower to the correct height.
  4. Press Check to see whether your tower fits the pattern.

How to use it at home or in class

A row shows towers of 1, 3, 1, 3, 1, ? cubes. The pattern alternates between 1 and 3, so the missing tower is 3. Spotting the alternation before calculating is the key move this game teaches.

Students often add one extra cube beyond the last tower rather than re-reading the full row for its rule. Pattern Builder forces them to look at the whole sequence, not just the final term, before acting.

Common questions

How does the cube-tower display make the pattern rule visible before any numbers appear?
The towers are physical heights, so even students who cannot yet read numbers can see a 1-3-1-3 alternation as a visual rhythm. Numbers and rules emerge from the picture, not from prior knowledge.
Which grades is Pattern Builder for?
It is designed for grades 2–4, where the curriculum introduces repeating and growing patterns as the first form of algebraic reasoning.
