Ratio Table

Ratio Table presents a grid of equivalent ratios with one value missing. Students read across the rows to find the scaling factor that connects column to column, then fill in the blank. The table format makes the pattern of equivalent ratios visible as a structure, not just isolated pairs.

What students practice

Working with a ratio table builds the habit of reading relationships across rows, not just within a single pair. This row-based thinking is the direct preparation for setting up and solving proportions, unit rate problems, and function tables in grades 4 through 6.

  1. Read the ratio table: each column shows a pair of values in the same ratio.
  2. Compare two complete columns to identify the scaling factor between them.
  3. Apply that factor to the known value in the incomplete column to find the missing value.
  4. Enter the missing value with the − / + buttons, then press Check.

How to use it at home or in class

In a 3:5 ratio table, the first column shows 3 and 5, the second shows 6 and 10, and the third shows 9 and a blank. The scaling factor from column 1 to column 3 is 3, so the missing value is 5 × 3 = 15.

Students sometimes add a constant instead of multiplying (for example, adding 3 to each value across rows). The table layout makes this error visible because the pattern breaks in the other row — the structured grid is its own correction tool.
