Bar Model

Bar Model turns a word problem into a visual tape diagram. Students read a problem about combining or removing a quantity, then drag a bar to the length that represents the answer. The diagram makes the part-whole relationship visible before any arithmetic is written — bridging reading comprehension and calculation in one action. Grades 2–4.

What students practice

Bar modelling is a structured visual strategy that converts language in a word problem into a diagram showing parts and wholes. Students who build bar models before calculating are less likely to choose the wrong operation, because the diagram makes the relationship explicit — a core strategy in problem-solving from grade 2 through upper primary.

  1. Read the word problem and identify the known quantities and the unknown.
  2. Decide whether you are combining (addition) or finding what remains (subtraction).
  3. Drag the bar rightward or use −/+ to set its length to match the answer.

How to use it at home or in class

Dana had 7 apples and got 5 more. Students drag the bar to length 12, representing the total. The bar diagram shows the two parts (7 and 5) combining into one whole — addition made visual.

Students often jump to arithmetic before understanding the problem's structure, sometimes subtracting when they should add. Drawing the bar first forces them to decide on the relationship between quantities before calculating, catching operation-choice errors early.
