Two-Step Problem

Two-Step Problem presents a word problem that cannot be solved with a single calculation. Students must identify two separate operations in the right order, carry out each step, and use the intermediate result to reach the final answer. The blueprint-style layout keeps the full problem visible while students work through it step by step. Grades 3–5.

What students practice

Solving multi-step word problems requires planning the order of operations, holding an intermediate result in working memory, and applying it in the next step. These are the same executive-function and algebraic-reasoning skills that underpin equation solving, ratio problems, and all applied maths from grade 3 onward.

  1. Read the full word problem on the blueprint carefully before calculating anything.
  2. Identify the first operation and calculate the intermediate result.
  3. Use that intermediate result in the second operation to reach the final answer.
  4. Set the final answer with the −/+ buttons and press Check.

How to use it at home or in class

A problem states: Omar had 24 pencils, gave 8 to his class, then bought 3 more packs of 5. Step 1: 24 − 8 = 16. Step 2: 16 + (3 × 5) = 31. Students must recognise both steps and execute them in order.

Students commonly solve only the first operation and submit that as the final answer, or combine all numbers in a single step without regard for order. The game reveals the error immediately, prompting students to re-read the problem and identify what they missed.
