Here is the honest truth. Long division itself is not difficult. What trips kids up is keeping the four steps in the right order. A child who already adds, subtracts, and multiplies confidently suddenly freezes here, and not because the math is too big for them. They simply forget what comes after what, lose their place halfway through, and decide they are bad at it.
That is exactly why the DMSB routine helps. Four letters, four steps, and that is the whole story. Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down. Say it out loud at every turn until it becomes automatic.
DMSB: four steps that repeat
- D is for Divide: how many times does the divisor fit?
- M is for Multiply: multiply that answer by the divisor.
- S is for Subtract: take it away to see what is left.
- B is for Bring down: pull down the next digit.
You loop through those four steps again and again until the digits run out. That is it. Every long division problem in the world works this way, whether it is a small grade 4 exercise or a huge number.
Let's solve one together: 752 divided by 4
Take a real problem and walk through it slowly. Have your child write each step in a notebook and say the letter out loud.
First digit. How many times does 4 go into 7? Once (D). 1 times 4 is 4 (M). 7 minus 4 is 3 (S). Bring down the 5 to make 35 (B).
Keep going. How many times does 4 go into 35? Eight times (D). 8 times 4 is 32 (M). 35 minus 32 is 3 (S). Bring down the 2 to make 32 (B).
Last round. How many times does 4 go into 32? Exactly eight (D). 8 times 4 is 32 (M). 32 minus 32 is 0 (S). No digits left to bring down, so we are finished.
The answer is 752 divided by 4 equals 188. Check it with multiplication: 188 times 4 is 752. It works. Do this check every time, because it gives your child real confidence.
The mistakes almost every child makes
Three errors catch most kids, and it helps to know them in advance.
- Forgetting to write a 0 in the answer. If at some step the divisor fits zero times, you must write a 0 on top and carry on. Kids skip it, and the answer comes out short by a whole digit.
- Messy columns. When the numbers are not lined up neatly under each other, everything falls apart. Graph paper fixes this instantly: one digit per square.
- Ignoring the remainder. Not every problem comes out even. If 3 is left at the end, that is the remainder and it has to be written down. It is not a failure, it is part of the answer.
Questions parents ask us
What age do kids start long division? Usually grade 4, once the times tables are solid. If multiplication is still shaky, shore that up first, otherwise the Multiply step turns into a battle every single time.
My child knows the steps but makes calculation errors, what now? It is almost always the times tables or subtraction with borrowing. Find exactly where it breaks, then practice that single operation rather than redoing the whole division from scratch.
