Area & Perimeter

Area and Perimeter presents a garden you can resize by dragging its edges. Sometimes the challenge asks for a specific area, sometimes a specific perimeter — and the key discovery is that two rectangles with the same area can have completely different perimeters, and vice versa.

What students practice

Distinguishing area from perimeter is one of the most persistent confusions in primary geometry. Working with both measurements on the same shape — and seeing them change independently as you resize — builds the conceptual separation that formulas alone cannot.

  1. Read whether the target is an area (square units) or a perimeter (linear units).
  2. Drag the garden's edge or use the width and height −/+ buttons to resize it.
  3. Watch the live readouts: area (length × width) and perimeter (2 × length + 2 × width) update together.
  4. Press Check when the correct measurement matches the target.

How to use it at home or in class

A 3 × 4 rectangle has area 12 and perimeter 14. A 2 × 6 rectangle also has area 12 but perimeter 16. Resizing between them on the same screen makes the contrast immediate and memorable.

Most students add all four side lengths for area (confusing it with perimeter) or multiply length and width for perimeter. Watching both numbers change simultaneously as the garden grows corrects both errors at once.

Common questions

Can the same target area be reached with different rectangles?
Yes. Many area targets have more than one solution (for example area 12 works for 2×6, 3×4, or 1×12). The game accepts any valid rectangle, making the task open-ended by design.
Which grades is this game for?
It suits grades 3-4, when students learn the formulas for area and perimeter of rectangles and need to see them as separate measurements.
How is this different from the Geoboard game, which also measures area?
Area and Perimeter constrains the shape to a rectangle and focuses on comparing area vs. perimeter of the same shape. Geoboard lets students build any polygon and targets area alone — more open, different skill.
