Tangram

Tangram gives students a set of classic geometric pieces — triangles, a square, and a parallelogram — and a silhouette outline to fill. Each piece must be matched to its correct slot, building shape-recognition, part-whole reasoning, and spatial fitting skills across grades 2-5.

What students practice

Matching geometric pieces to an outline develops shape recognition (triangles of different sizes, parallelogram orientation) and spatial decomposition — the ability to see a complex shape as a sum of simpler parts, a foundation for area and fractions of shapes.

  1. Look at the silhouette outline and identify the individual piece shapes within it.
  2. Tap a piece from the tray to pick it up, then tap the matching outline region to place it.
  3. If a piece does not fit a slot, try a different one — each colour and shape has exactly one matching outline.
  4. Press Check when every outline region is filled.

How to use it at home or in class

The large silhouette of a running figure contains two large triangles, one medium triangle, two small triangles, a square, and a parallelogram. Identifying the parallelogram's outline slot before placing the square prevents the most common placement error.

Students often try to force a triangle into a slot that is the right triangle shape but the wrong size, because they focus on shape type rather than shape size. Colour-coded pieces help, but size-checking — 'is this piece big enough?' — must become the first question.

Do the pieces need to be rotated or flipped?
In this version each piece matches one outline exactly without rotation or flipping, keeping the focus on shape recognition rather than spatial transformation.
Which grades is this game for?
It suits grades 2-5: younger students match by shape and colour, older students reason about geometry vocabulary — triangle types, parallelogram, square — as they place each piece.
How is Tangram different from Mirror Image, which also involves fitting shapes on a grid?
Tangram is about matching discrete pieces to an outline: shape recognition and part-whole assembly. Mirror Image is about applying a reflection rule to fill individual grid cells. Completely different spatial skills.
