Algebra Balance

Algebra Balance bridges arithmetic and algebra by making an equation visible. The scale starts balanced with crystals on both sides and an unknown crystal marked with a question mark. Students remove equal amounts from each side until the unknown stands alone — performing the inverse operation physically rather than symbolically.

What students practice

Algebra Balance teaches the central principle of equation solving: whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other. This hands-on inverse-operation experience prepares students for formal algebra far better than memorizing rules about moving terms across the equals sign.

  1. Look at the balanced scale: one side has the unknown (?) plus some crystals, the other side has only crystals.
  2. Use the Left −/+ and Right −/+ buttons to remove the same number of crystals from both sides.
  3. Keep removing equal amounts until the ? stands alone on one side.
  4. When the beam is level with ? isolated, press Check to confirm the solution.

How to use it at home or in class

The scale shows ? + 4 = 9. Remove 4 crystals from each side: left becomes ?, right becomes 5. The beam levels and ? = 5. Students feel the logic rather than guessing.

Beginners often remove crystals only from one side to clear the unknown. When they do this the beam tips immediately, providing instant corrective feedback without any explanation needed.
