Place Value Builder sets students in a warehouse where they stack physical blocks into hundreds, tens, and ones columns to construct a target number. When any column reaches ten blocks, they automatically bundle into one larger unit — making the base-ten trading rule an observable event rather than a memorised procedure.
Place Value Builder develops the understanding that each digit's position determines its value: a 3 in the hundreds column is worth 300, not 3. Students practise composing multi-digit numbers from their constituent parts and see regrouping as a natural consequence of the base-ten system.
To build 234: add 2 hundreds-flats, 3 ten-rods, and 4 ones-cubes. The warehouse shows 200+30+4 stacked separately, then Check confirms the combined value is 234.
Students often enter the digit, not the value — placing 2 ones when asked for 234 because the digit '4' is the one they see last. The warehouse's colour-coded columns (blue for hundreds, yellow for tens, red for ones) train them to read each digit in its correct column before placing blocks.
