Multiplication Arrays

Multiplication Arrays has students construct a 3-D cube grid by choosing the number of rows and columns, then pressing Check to confirm the product. Unlike the existing Multiplication Array game that presents a pre-built fruit grid, here students actively build the rectangle themselves — making the equation and its visual proof one action.

What students practice

Building the array trains students to see multiplication as a rectangular area — rows times columns — rather than a sequence of additions. Choosing both dimensions themselves reinforces that either factor can be rows or columns, concretising the commutative property before formal proof.

  1. Read the target multiplication fact shown (e.g. 3 rows × 4 columns).
  2. Drag or use −/+ buttons to set the number of rows and columns.
  3. Watch the cube grid grow to fill the rectangle you have specified.
  4. Press Check to confirm that rows × columns equals the stated product.

How to use it at home or in class

For 4×6 the student sets 4 rows and 6 columns, filling a 24-cube rectangle. Rotating the view to see 6 rows of 4 makes 4×6=6×4 immediately obvious without any teacher explanation.

Students sometimes confuse rows and columns, placing 6 rows and 4 columns for a 4×6 prompt. The game accepts either orientation — the product is the same — helping them discover commutativity rather than treating the order as a rule to memorise.
