Ten Frame Fill

Ten Frame Fill places students in front of a 2×5 grid of holes and asks them to fill the correct number of marbles. The fixed ten-slot frame anchors every number from 1 to 10 to its visual distance from ten, making the structure of small numbers concrete and automatic.

What students practice

The ten-frame builds the 'friend of ten' concept: every number from 1–9 is understood as a certain number of marbles plus a certain number of empty holes. This relationship to ten accelerates mental addition (7+5=10+2) and subtraction far beyond what counting-on achieves.

  1. Read the target number shown above the ten-frame.
  2. Drag across the holes or use −/+ to add or remove marbles.
  3. Notice how many slots remain empty — that many are needed to reach ten.
  4. When the filled slots match the target, press Check.

How to use it at home or in class

Placing 7 marbles fills the top row completely (5) and 2 slots in the bottom row, leaving 3 empty. The student immediately sees 7=5+2 and 10−7=3, without counting.

Students who simply count to the target number miss the ten-frame's key lesson: the relationship between the number and ten. Teachers can prompt by asking 'how many are empty?' alongside 'how many are filled?' to activate the complementary thinking the frame is designed for.
