Fair Share

Fair Share (Division Share) models division as equal sharing using coins and treasure chests. Students distribute a pile of coins evenly among a set of chests, placing as many as possible in each, with any that cannot be shared equally dropping into a remainder pouch. The mechanic makes both the quotient and the remainder physically unmistakable.

What students practice

Division Share builds the partitive division model (sharing into equal groups) and gives remainders a concrete meaning. Students stop treating the remainder as a mistake and start seeing it as simply what is left after fair sharing — a key step before they encounter division with remainders in written form.

  1. Read how many coins to share and how many chests to fill.
  2. Use −/+ buttons (or drag upward) to place the same number of coins in every chest.
  3. Share as many coins as you can equally; anything left over belongs in the remainder pouch.
  4. Press Check when every chest holds an equal share and the pouch has the leftover coins.

How to use it at home or in class

Share 17 coins among 5 chests: 5 × 3 = 15, so 3 coins go in each chest and 2 are left in the pouch. The screen shows 5 full chests and a pouch with 2 coins, making 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2 undeniable.

Students frequently try to give every coin away and leave the pouch empty, splitting coins to get an exact share. The game only accepts whole numbers per chest, guiding them toward the concept of remainder as the honest leftover.

Which grades is Fair Share designed for?
Grades 3–4, where students learn division as equal sharing and encounter remainders for the first time in the curriculum.
How is this different from Division Towers (Long Division)?
Fair Share uses physical coin-sharing to build the concept of division and remainders. Division Towers (Long Division) applies that understanding step by step in the formal long-division algorithm, moving from concrete to procedural.
Can students choose how many coins go in the pouch?
The pouch fills automatically with whatever is left after the chests are filled. Students only control how many coins to put in each chest, keeping the focus on finding the largest equal share.
