Number Line Jump puts a car on a race track number line and asks students to hop it to a target position using jumps of their chosen size. Each forward or backward hop is a visible addition or subtraction, turning the abstract operation into a physical journey along a scaled line.
Number Line Jump builds flexible mental arithmetic by making addition and subtraction directional: forward for adding, backward for subtracting. Students develop number-line intuition — the sense of distance and direction — which underpins integer operations and later coordinate work.
To reach 17 from 0 with jumps of 5: three hops forward land on 15, then switch to a jump of 2 for one more hop to reach 17. Students see 5+5+5+2=17 as a path, not an abstract sum.
Students often choose a jump size that does not divide evenly into the target and overshoot, then struggle to backtrack. The game allows mixed jump sizes in one round, encouraging students to plan a two-step approach rather than a single repeated hop.
