Dot Flash

Dot Flash (Subitize) trains the brain's fastest number sense: recognising how many dots appear at a glance without counting. A brief flash of dots on the magician's table vanishes under a cloth; students enter how many they saw. Practising subitising builds the perceptual foundation that makes all later arithmetic feel intuitive.

What students practice

Subitising — instant quantity recognition — is the earliest number skill and directly predicts arithmetic fluency. Students who can see 4 as a group without counting move faster to number bonds, addition facts, and eventually mental calculation because small quantities are already automatic.

How to use it at home or in class

Five dots arranged like a die face appear for half a second. A student who subitises recognises the familiar pattern instantly. A student who counts takes longer and may lose the image before finishing — the game trains the perceptual shortcut.

Students who do not yet subitise will try to count one dot at a time during the flash, often losing track. The game's brief exposure time prevents counting and encourages pattern recognition, gently training the student to see groups rather than individuals.
