Volume Builder

Volume Builder fills a transparent tank with unit cubes layer by layer as students set length, width, and height. The target is a specific volume, and the cubes accumulate visually so the abstract formula V = l × w × h becomes a count of real objects being stacked.

What students practice

Building volume by adjusting three independent dimensions cements the idea that volume is a product of three lengths (l × w × h) rather than a property of surface. This prepares students for grade 4-6 work on composite volumes, surface area, and the distinction between 2D area and 3D volume.

  1. Read the target volume shown above the tank.
  2. Set the length and width by dragging or using the −/+ buttons; the base layer of cubes fills the tank floor.
  3. Set the height with the height buttons; the tank fills upward layer by layer.
  4. Press Check when the cube count matches the target volume.

How to use it at home or in class

For volume 24 a student might set 4 × 3 × 2: four cubes wide, three deep, two layers high. Changing to 6 × 2 × 2 gives the same volume with a different shape — a direct demonstration that volume is independent of the box's proportions.

Students often confuse volume with surface area, counting the outside faces rather than the total cubes inside. Watching the interior fill cube by cube — and noticing that hidden inner cubes also count — addresses this directly.

Common questions

Can the same volume be reached with different dimensions?
Yes. Many targets have multiple valid dimension combinations. The game accepts any (l, w, h) whose product equals the target, rewarding exploration of factor triples.
Which grades is this game for?
It fits grades 4-6, when students first encounter volume as a measurement of three-dimensional space and learn the formula l × w × h.
How is Volume Builder different from Geoboard, which also involves measuring space?
Geoboard measures 2D area in square units on a flat grid. Volume Builder measures 3D volume in cubic units by filling a box. The step from squares to cubes is exactly the conceptual jump these games bracket.
